The Shelby County Commission in Tennessee voted to rename the county courthouse the D’Army Bailey Courthouse Building in honor of the late D’Army Bailey. Judge Bailey served on Tennessee’s 13th Judicial District from 1990 to 2009 and from 2014 to 2015. He also was an author, actor, and civil rights activist who helped to preserve the crumbling Lorraine Motel — where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was assassinated — and convert it into the National Civil Rights Museum.
The Shelby County Criminal Justice Center in downtown Memphis, Tennessee. The building opened in 1981 and became known locally and in slang by its address 201 Poplar. It houses several courts, Police and Sheriff’s offices, and the District Attorney General and Public Defender offices. The jail is attached.
In 2018, the justice center was named for longtime Shelby County Commissioner Walter L. Bailey, Jr. He was on the county commission for more than 40 years. Bailey was involved in desegregating Memphis schools and represented Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the 1968 sanitation strike in Memphis.
